Kitchen Revamps

Home ownership seems to parallel any long term relationship. After finding the perfect home, we sought to make it ours permanently. Once that was accomplished, the very first thing we did was set about changing everything.

First up, was the kitchen. We both love to cook, and like having a lot of space and good tools. The kitchen in the new place was adequately large, had decent functionality and looked great, but there were still some things that could stand improvement. Behind the cut, you’ll find a rundown of the kitchen as it was when we started.

Going around the room, we see first a sort of awkward entry way with two doors, and a little slip of wall. (Furniture and art in these photos are all from when the house was still on the market, so it can be factored out of the analysis). Even if we’d liked this table, the chairs are rather clumsy since they block both doorways once anyone sits in them.

Next is the fridge and stove, squashed together a bit cozily. Notice that there’s not even really any counter space on which to set things like the spoon you’re using to stir the spaghetti sauce.

Finally, we have the main counter and storage space in the kitchen.

Taking inventory, you’ll see not just a whole lot of counter space in this kitchen, and sort of short on the cabinets once you consider that there isn’t a pantry. Dishes, implements, small appliances, food – all meant to be stored in this small kitchen. This is complicated once you discover that most of these cabinets have some wiring or plumbing running along the backs, making space even tighter.

The major changes we sought to enact first thing were: adding some storage, adding more counter space, and adding a pantry. Aggressive? You’d think so. But we were able to accomplish all of that without tearing anything out or making major changes. Check out the next posts for our kitchen makeover.
